Sustainable Gym Equipment: ELEIKO

Swedish brand ELEIKO show ‘sustainability’ can be applied to gym equipment

The green gym equipment sector

In our never-ending quest for premium gym equipment brands with a respect for the environment, Swedish brand ELEIKO have increasingly become a global reference point. Perhaps it is that Sweden itself is a leader in green businesses?

SportsArt is a US brand focus on energy efficiency in particular, claiming to pump energy back into the grid when a sufficient number of their cardio machines are plugged into the network. We have not seen a full sustainability report, nor any information about the materials that go into their equipment yet however, suggesting there may be more work to do there.

Nohrd / WaterRower are a US-German group that use FSC certified sustainable wood in their equipment, which is a great start and creates a pleasing aesthetic. Again though, we have not yet seen a sustainability report as comprehensive and as extensive as that produced by Eleiko. We are fans of this company however so remain hopeful that they will steadily flesh out their environmental policy in due course.

A sustainable gym equipment brand

There is more to it than that however as this particular company appears to have made a transition away from being a performance and weightlifting specialist (barbells and plates) into an all-round strength equipment generalist.

Sustainability & Scandinavian design

In the process, they have evolved a market-leading sustainability strategy and an understated but undoubtedly premium aesthetic inspired by minimalist Scandinavian design.

Put these two together and you have what few have achieved thus far, a combination of form and function, aesthetics and respect for the planet. We’re fans, let’s put it that way!

Eleiko’s Sustainability Policy

Their policy aligns with the UN Sustainability Goals and the goal of the Swedish government to ‘leave the environment in a better place for the next generation’.

Eleiko’s unique twist on this is to help create a ‘stronger world’, with stronger people, stronger communities and overall a healthy, strong world.

Eleiko’s three main goals revolve around indoor air quality, creating a non-toxic indoor environment and to reduce their impact on the environment in general.

See their website’s social responsibility page here.

How are Eleiko contributing to a sustainable gym sector?
