GYM equipment CONSULTANT

gym design & FITNESS equipment SELECTION

We work on home gym, residential gyms, residential gym and commercial gym assignments around the world.

gym equipment is gym design too

sourcing & selecting equipment

Every fitness facility is unique, so its equipment offer should be too - reflecting user demographics, training preferences, the owner’s vision, while also integrating aesthetically into the surrounding context. We start by understanding the overall gym concept, equipment budget, user profiles and site features. From there we build a draft gym equipment list, create a 2D layout, a 3D visualization, detailed budget and equipment schedule ready for procurement.

GYM EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT

Our aim is to ensure a cohesive experience that integrates a certain type of fitness training with the right mix of gym equipment to add value to the customer experience. There is an increasing range of mobility and recovery equipment available on the market that we also find space for.

We like to make space for a small selection of quality strength machines, the obligatory cardio line-up of treadmills, rowers, spin bikes, recline bikes, step machines and elliptical cross-trainers, as well as free weights, functional equipment and a stretching area.

GMY EQUIPMENT CUSTOMIZATION

Part of our fitness consultant services includes customization of training equipment such as strength machines, stainless steel dumbbells, functional rigs, squat racks and exercises benches. Our suppliers offer a range of options for frame colour, upholstery, stitching and branding.

Home gym equipment lends itself especially well to this type of customized approach, without the constraints of having to please a whole range of guests or residents. We also previously modified a set of kettlebells for a yacht club using boat hull paint!

designing gyms. Planning budgets.

phasing & budget planning

In some instances as a gym designer we are required to source the best value gym equipment appropriate to the exact context, for example a beach gym that will eventually be replaced by an indoor gym facility. Any gym space will have its own unique perspective on budget in other words, so we work with what we’re given.

When handling a home gym or fitness room assignment where space can be limited, it is an intricate process of selecting the best home gym equipment for the client’s needs and training preferences.. and leaving out everything else!

cardio: the king of vo2 max

cardio TRAINING

Whether in a multi-unit residential gym, corporate gym or private gym setting, the cardio zone is where spending a little extra on high quality gym equipment makes most sense. More moving parts and high-tech screens inevitably mean more things that can go wrong in future. Save on dumbbells if you must but not here!

As a non-partial gym consultancy we can cherry pick from a range of different brands, offering clients competitive pricing, while making the best of the available floor space and providing enough detailed information prior to procurement to ensure the smooth running of these machines in the long-term.

stay strong. stay safe.

STRENGTH equipment selection

According to the type of fitness club in question there will always be some adjustments needed to ensure quality fitness equipment in the strength training area that is suited to that specific audience.

Essentials for any gym space will likely include a lower body push and a pull, as well as an upper body push and a pull, with a cable machine for rotational movements. Interior designers need to leave adequate circulation space around each machine for user comfort.

functional training

functional rigs

The fitness industry has fully embraced functional training and so a functional rig is no longer a mere nice-to-have but an essential part of any fitness space. Often the best solutions require custom dimensions to maximize floor space, we then adjust the rig’s spec to to provide a wide range of movements and exercises.

This is also one area where gym design consultants lean heavily on trusted manufacturers who bring their own experience to the project, and assist in a smooth gym installation prior to launch.

boxing & kickboxing

boxing & kickboxing equipment

A lot of upscale commercial gyms and gyms in residential developments now incorporate a space for boxing bags. They don’t take up a lot of the available space and are relatively low cost - it’s worth spending on high quality bags though.

A mix of heavy punch bags, full height kickboxing bags and smaller upper-cut bags are all that’s required for a savvy gym consultant to add tangible value to fitness centres focused on an enhanced user experience.

Yoga studios and stretching areas are now an established part of almost all of our gym design consultancy assignments for fitness facilities around the world.

More often than not, this is also where we can play with colour and materials with quality equipment that integrates aesthetically into the existing space.

gym equipment glossary

  • Another staple of the gym equipment list, one could feasibly use a Smith Machine or indeed a squat rack for a bench press but for convenience, having a dedicated bench, set-up for benching, makes a lot of sense. Squatter platform optional, as are weight plate storage pins integrated into the bench - alternatively we need to specify a weight plate stack close by.

  • A classic and always part of our core gym machine mix, the 'DAP' is a multi-functional product for all manner of cable-based rotational movements, as well as chest presses, single arm pulling movements and of course loaded leg raises for shaping that behind. Add in a pull-up bar overhead and you have a true powerhouse of a machine.

  • Also known as freeweights, these are typically either hex shaped (like a hexagon) and Made In China, all more or less the same, or in a quality stainless steel version with optional branding. We prefer the former for outdoor gym scenarios or a low budget home gym, while the stainless steel option is always our ideal solution for any designer gym we're working on. They just ooze quality.

  • Often favoured by more mature gym users, or those looking for a stress-free warm-up machine, the elliptical also holds value when training injured as it's extremely light on the joints.

  • A rig integrates multiple features such as a squat rack , monkey bars, dip bars, pull-up bars and occasionally storage shelves to create a functional training hub. We specify our own custom rigs, rather than rely on an off-the-shelf product in order to maximize its value in the gym equipment line-up.

  • Ideal for focused leg strength, this is our go-to machine for complete leg workouts as it hits the quads and hamstrings, can be used either with both legs or as a single leg movement. We always specify a double weight stack, or at least a heavy version with 140kg rather than a 100kg stack - the legs are by far our strongest limbs!

  • Far better suited to HIIT sessions than a standard treadmill, these new manual options, often curved in shape, are easier on the joints and far more engaging.

  • We favour either a Concept2 rower or a WaterRower machine, alternatively it's an upgrade to a virtual trainer product with in-built entertainment such as Ergatta or CityRow. A full body warm-up, cool down or indeed VO2 session machine. What's not to like?

  • When training solo, some additional support is always welcome to avoid injury especially when lifting heavy or training around an injury, so a Smith Machine has a multitude of use cases. We often recommend them for hotels and resorts too as it means no barbells crashing around near to mirrored glass walls for example, one less thing to be picked up off the floor and generally a safer option than a squat rack.

  • A great way to boost cardio endurance, especially if suffering from knee problems, this impact-free workout can be pumped up with Peloton style workout videos or oriented more towards power output in Watts or Strava style distance training. Either way, it's worth investing in a high quality bike.

  • It's hard to imagine a gym without a squat rack nowadays, especially one loaded up with weight plate storage pins on the side, a pull-up bar overhead, extra barbell storage and, why not, a custom paint job to match the gym interiors.
